Corona Virus

The Corona virus public health emergency is like nothing that's been seen in any of our lifetimes. Organizations and agencies with far more information and resources than ourselves are struggling with the appropriate responses. All Manhattan Beach School District campuses are shut down and class instruction is being provided remotely and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

Accordingly, all troop activity, including weekly troop meetings, are canceled until further notice. The troop will continue to follow the lead of MBUSD and the City or Manhattan Beach as well as any direction from BSA Pacfica district and/or Greater Los Angeles Area Council.

Please stay safe. We will update you as new information becomes available.

Scouting from Home
i.e. What You Can Do Now

Our meetings have been cancelled for now, but that doesn't mean we don't have to stop being Scouts. In fact, you should take this unique opportunity to do some of those Scouting activities that each of you have most likely been putting off. Here are some great things to do during this time:
  • Be prepared. Read up on our current situation. What can you do to protect yourself and your family? Research actions other countries have taken.
  • Do a good turn daily. Does a neighbor need a hand? Can you help around the house?
  • Follow the Scout oath and Law. We re-state these every week for a reason - there are good values within each of them. Always good to remind yourself of these pillars during events like these.
  • Work on some merit badges. Family Life Merit badge would be a great one - you will be home - there are things to do around the house! Work on a family project (requirement #4).
  • Get your Scouting awards in order. What a great time to find that shoe-box and put your blue cards and merit badge cards in a 3-ring binder. Haven't had time to sew your merit badges on your merit badge sash? Now you do! While you are at it, make sure your Scoutbook dates MATCH your awards - they should match - let Mrs. Hedges know if anything is incorrect.
  • Update Scoutbook with service hours and camping nights. Some of our recent Eagle Scouts needed to put this together for their Eagle Books - you can get ahead of the game by entering your information now in Scoutbook.

Join Troop 849

Boy Scouting is for boys ages 11-17. Boys may also become Boy Scouts if they have earned the Arrow of Light Award or completed the fifth grade and are at least 10 years old.

Adventure

Scouts crave adventure and Troop 849 delivers. We schedule a year-round calendar of outdoor activities, including:

  • Hiking
  • Camping
  • Rock climbing
  • Kayaking
  • Fishing

The troop's week-long visit to a summer camp and the week-long trek into the Sierras are annual highlights.

Safety is always our first concern. Scouts learn to experience the outdoors with skill and confidence.

While learning about self-reliance, Scouts also learn the value of teamwork, camaraderie, and experiencing the world around them.

Achievement

Troop 849 has a long history of helping Scouts climb the ladder of achievement.

We are proud of our ever-growing Eagle Scout Honor Roll, which recognizes over 130 Scouts who have obtained Scouting's highest and most coveted rank.

But achievement is emphasized for all Scouts in the troop, not just those aiming for Eagle.

Our weekly troop meetings include sessions aimed at helping Scouts attain any of the many merit badges that Scouting offers.

Our patrol structure is designed to encourage Scouts to take on more leadership and responsibility as their skills grow.

We encourage public service through a variety of service projects that enhance our community.

Fun

Scouting wouldn't be Scouting without a healthy dose of fun.

Our troop members love the experience of camping and hiking, and the sense of exploration that goes along with it.

Our weekly troop meetings regularly feature activities whose main purpose is enjoyment.

It's all about balance - and the combination of adventure, achievement and fun that you'll find in Scouting is unbeatable.

News Flash!

The original Manhattan Beach Scout House was built by volunteers in 1952. It has been an integral part of Troop 849's program for decades, providing a fine meeting place. It is on its last legs so plans are afoot to replace it. Learn more about the effort at www.thescouthouse.org.
